十二生肖也被称为十二年兽，在中国的历法上有十二只年兽依次轮流当值。很久很久以前，玉帝为了给人间定时间，给人类归属，决定在人间选拔十二种动物作为生肖。就派神仙下凡跟动物们说了这件事，又定了时间在卯年卯月卯日卯时到天宫来竞选，来的越早的排的越靠前，后面的排不上，而那个时候的猫和老鼠还是好朋友，猫爱睡觉但他也想被选上，所以就叫老鼠到时候叫他。（轻忆记忆力）

可是老鼠一转头就忘记了，老鼠去找老牛，说他起得早跑得快，叫牛到时候带带他，老牛答应了，那个时候的龙是没有犄角的，而鸡是有犄角的，龙就跟鸡说，鸡已经很漂亮了，用不着犄角，*借他，鸡一听龙的奉承，很高兴，就把犄角借给了龙，并叫龙竞选后记得按时还他。

到了卯年卯月卯日卯时，众动物纷纷赶向天宫，而猫还在睡觉 ，鼠坐在牛的背上，到达天庭后，老鼠“蹭”的一跳，玉皇大帝就说老鼠zui早到达，让老鼠排di一；老牛排第二；老虎到了排第三；兔子也到了，排第四。

龙来得很晚，但他个儿大，玉皇大帝一眼就看到了他，并看他这么漂亮，就让他排第五，这时后面的蛇跑来说：“我排第六！”；马和羊也到了，可他们推来推去的，玉皇大帝看他们这么有礼貌，就让他们排了第七第八。（轻忆记忆力）

猴子本来排在后面，可是他凭自己会跳，就拉着天上的云朵跳到了前面，排到了第九；接着鸡狗猪也纷纷被选上，竞赛结束后猫才醒来，老鼠刚回家就被猫满世界的追。
